When the participants evaluated the expectations and tasting experience of the two different beers under sighted conditions (pale vs. dark), after tasting, those who preferred pale beers, rated the darker beer as tasting sweeter than those who usually prefer other types of beers, such as dark ones (see Experiment 2).

Both the groups could not distinguish between the taste of the beer when visuals were absent i.e. they were blindfolded. Further suggesting that the sight was the only sensory stimuli that changed the perception of people towards beer.

Why this happens is still a mystery, but one thing is for sure, your sight can deceive you. This is the primary reason why fancy restaurants are able to sell you regular dishes at exuberant prices. It’s all about the visual appeal of the dish; this is true for small portion sizes as well. So next time you pay for your food, make sure you pay a fair prize for what you eat and not just for what you see.
